Can I Use Boiling Water For Hot Protein Drinks?

Ideally not for hot protein drinks. Boiling water straight from a kettle can often make protein powders clump and the end result is a cup of boiling water with cooked protein lumps all through it. Hardly a delightful result!

By adding boiling water to protein powder, or vice versa, essentially what is occurring is the active cooking of your protein powder. The end result is literally protein dumplings in hot water. Yuck.

Whilst the boiling water is not likely to affect the quality of the protein, it certainly compromises the edibility, texture and enjoyment of the beverage.

Nevertheless there is nothing nicer than a nice mug of hot chocolate protein drink, especially in cooler months. Additionally, there is a whole range of protein soups that are easily spoiled if made with excessive heat.

So what is the solution to the problems when using kettles for hot protein drinks?

Hot Protein Drinks – How To Get The Best Results

The simple solution to this dilemma is to use water that is sufficiently hot to drink, but not boiling.

Often your protein powder manufacturer will have heating guidelines either on their website or the protein container itself. It’s worth checking this out to avoid disappointment. Some products tolerate heat quite well and others do not.

Using a variable temperature kettle with a delicate heat setting is ideal. The Cuisinart CPK-17 variable temperature kettle is an example of such a kettle. Select the delicate heat setting and this kettle will turn off automatically as soon as it has reached a delicate heat. Remove it from the base and proceed to making your protein drink.

However, you do not even have to go that fancy. Simply owning a stovetop or electric kettle with a thermometer gauge on the side is an excellent solution to the challenge. Just keep an eye on the gauge as the water is heating and when the water has reached the ideal temperature, remove it from the heat and proceed to making your protein drink.

More Tips For Silky-Smooth Hot Protein Drinks

  1. Mix the protein powder first with a little cold water till a smooth thick paste is achieved. Do this before pouring in heated water.
  2. Alternatively, mix the protein drink up cold and then proceed to gently heat in the microwave. You must keep an eye on this carefully as overheating is very easy in a microwave.
